Episode 11: Crowdsourcing Comics

News:

  • A bit of old news: Star Wars artist Dave Dorman thought breastfeeding wasn’t appropriate for children. Artist Fiona Staples responded.
  • DC announces cancelled titles, new titles, and a new logo.  With the cancellations, DC loses three superheroes of colour: Mister Terrific, Static Shock and OMAC. DC also loses all (well, two) of their black writers.
  • John Rozum has posted online about his frustrations writing Static Shock.
  • Also getting Worlds’ Finest (starring Huntress and Power Girl) and Earth Two (with art by Nicola Scott).
  • Hawk and Dove is cancelled and Rob Leifeld gets rewarded with writing gigs on three more comics?
  • Liefeld and Robert Kirkman have cancelled their high-selling Image comic The Infinite, other irreconcilable differences about inking.
  • One of the new titles: Dial H – Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.
  • Marvel titles are coming out on the Nook, which would be fine except that Barnes & Noble are arseholes.
  • GLAAD announces nominees for Outstanding Comic Book of 2011.
    • Avengers: The Children's Crusade, by Allan Heinberg (Marvel)
    • Batwoman, by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman (DC Comics)
    • Secret Six, by Gail Simone (DC Comics)
    • Veronica Presents: Kevin Keller, by Dan Parent (Archie Comics)
    • X-Factor, by Peter David (Marvel Comics)
  • Psylocke is in an impossible pose. Noelle Stevensen makes fun of it.
  • Fox News criticises DC comics for being full of sex and violence and then SHOWS THESE COMICS TO CHILDREN!!! (approx 10-13 according to Wiki)
  • Least I Could Do adds itself to the growing list of webcomics tackling depression. The storyline starts here: http://leasticoulddo.com/comic/20120106

Reviews

  • Rin-Ne Vol 1, by Rumiko Takahashi (Viz Media)
  • The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths, by Brian Froud, Brian Holguin, Alex Sheikman and Lizzy John (Archaia)
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #5 and #6, by Brian Michael Bendis, Sara Pichelli and Chris Samnee (Marvel Comics)
  • Batwoman #4 and #5, by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman (DC Comics)

Special topic: Crowdsourcing comics

  • Crowdsourcing is becoming an increasingly common way for independent writers and artists to fund their comics and graphic novels. Is this a revolution in comics, or are there problems with this style of publishing?
  • Paul Duffield (Freakangels) is promoting a new graphic novel project on Indie Go Go.
  • Digital Manga are now using Kickstarter for less commercial products - but is this the right thing to do?
  • Alex de Campi and Jimmy Broxton fell out over the graphic novel Ashes, funded via Kickstarter - funders have been offered refunds while de Campi tries to source a new artist. What happens when a project collapses after the fans have paid their money?
  • Some crowdsourcing websites - have a look around:

Opening theme created using Garage Band.

Episode 10: Hugo Special

Episode 10 - Hugo Nominations Are Open!
Nominations are open for the 2012 Hugo Awards, which include a category for Best Graphic Story. This means it’s time to start recommending the best science fiction and fantasy comics 2012 has to offer! News

  • Both Marvel Entertainment and DC Comics are supporting SOPA, the US House of Representative’s new and slightly nightmarish legislation to curb online piracy.
  • DC’s “Hooded Lady”, who cameoed in all 52 relaunched titles, is named “Pandora”.
  • The first cancellations of the DC New 52 are reportedly due by issue #8. Titles widely considered to be “on the bubble” (and the number of copies they sold in November) include Legion Lost (28k), Grifter (27k), Resurrection Man (26.5k), Captain Atom (24k), Mr Terrific (23k), OMAC (22.5k), Voodoo (22.5k), Static Shock (22k), Men of War (21k) and Blackhawks (20k).
  • For the record, Suicide Squad (37k) and Red Hood (45k) are probably, and annoyingly, safe. Miniseries, however, aren’t tracking too well: this includes My Greatest Adventure (12k), The Shade (21k), The Huntress (28k), The Penguin: Pain and Prejudice (21k).
  • 8 titles sold more than 100,000 copies in November, which seems promising: Justice League, Batman, Action Comics, Green Lantern, Point One, Avenging Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men and Detective Comics.
  • In WTF news, Axe Body Spray (Lynx in Australia) is making a comic book.
  • On 7 January, Marvel offered coupons for print comics to US customers when they bought digital ones.
  • The 12 issue series Avengers vs. X-Men is only getting one spin-off, but it’s AvX: Versus, which contains the full fight scenes pulled from the main title.

Reviews

  • Grant complains about Aquaman #1-4 and recommends Fatale #1.
  • Grant strongly recommends Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand.
  • Kitty recommends The 99 #6-7.

Eligible Works To kickstart the conversation on Hugo-eligible comics and graphic novels, we recommend you check out the following titles.

Episode 9: Year In Review

It’s the end of 2011, and time for 2011 to be put on the microscope: what were the highlights and lowlights? What were our favourite comics of the year (go on, guess)? What can we do to make 2012 a better year for comics than 2011?

News

  • The industry is, by and large, on Christmas break, so there isn’t too much comic news this fortnight. We instead talk about some gender-based news we’ve seen going around the Internet.
  • A young girl objects to superheroes in the boy’s aisle, and pink things in the girl’s aisle - as do we all. This leads Grant and Kitty to talk about Lego.
  • One teacher has found a way to deal with gender in the classroom.
  • This week it’s Stan Lee’s 89th birthday! Happy birthday, Stan!
  • Archaia are publishing a three-volume Dark Crystal prequel comic. A preview is readable over at Comics Alliance.
  • Rebecca Watson wrote a disturbing post on sexism in the atheist community. (WARNING: some of the quoted discussion board posts in this article are very triggering in regards to sexual violence against women.)
  • In other news, neither Suicide Squad nor Red Hood and the Outlaws have been cancelled.

Reviews

  • Kitty finally reviews SVK.
  • Grant finally reviews the Mark Waid Daredevil.
  • Kitty reviews Ultimate Spider-Man #4.
  • Grant reviews The Ray #1.

Special Topic - The Year In Review 2011 was a big year for American comics. We discuss:

  • The really good things for the year, including the two best comics.
  • The really bad things for the year, including Suicide Squad and Red Hood and the Outlaws.
  • The trends of the year: what will 2011 be remembered for?
  • What we’re looking forward to into 2012: Womanthology, Conan the Barbarian (now there’s two things you wouldn’t expect to see in the same sentence), the Hugo Awards and reading through Tansy Rayner Roberts’ list of recommended comics.
  • How to make a difference in 2012: how do we get DC and Marvel to publish more comics with writing and art by women, or with female protagonists?

Episode 8: Women in Comics

News

  • A live-action American adaptation of Akira continues to shape up, and appears to be another “racefail” in the making.
  • The Avengers get a butt-tastic makeover.
  • Both Chris Sims and Alan Moore respond to Frank Miller’s anti-Occupy, Islamaphobic rantings and give him the rich beating he deserves.
  • Dark Horse are to start issuing day-and-date digital editions of their comics at $1-$1.50 less than retail copies. Some comic shops have responded by boycotting Dark Horse.
  • Webcomics deal with depression.
  • Marvel have cancelled X-23 and Ghost Rider, which means that the company now don’t publish any comic books starring women at all.
  • The most expensive comic in the world: Nicolas Cage’s copy of Action Comics #1 sells for more than $2m.
  • New teaser posters are out for The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man.
  • Suicide Squad is up to issue #4 and is still not cancelled.

Reviewed this episode

  • The Shade #1-2
  • Wolverine and the X-Men #1-2
  • The 99 #3-#6
  • Far too much Shortpacked, thanks to Tansy. Two key examples Kitty mentions are here and here.

Special topic: Women in Comics With Marvel seemingly abandoning female superheroes (at least, ones who get their own comics), we take a look at women in comics.

  • The Avengers is coming to cinemas with only one woman out of seven characters - and she’s arguably the least super-powered character of the bunch.
  • We point out the second and third longest-running female comic book characters in the USA - and the highest-selling.
  • We discuss the difference between “objectified” and “idealised”.
  • A few examples of the way comic book culture actively excludes women and here and here. (NSFW - by which we mean at least one of these links is definitely about porn.)
  • Which of Marvel’s numerous excellent female characters deserve their own continuing title?
  • Kitty’s installed “Jailbreak the Patriarchy” on Crome.
  • Here’s a great link to Sinfest that Kitty mentions, as well as Kitty Pryde’s kick-ass comic book cover.

No feedback this week, but stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear a Special Message!

Episode 7: Religion

News

  • The digital comics war continues to heat up, as Marvel makes its comics available on the Barnes & Noble Nook and adds free download codes for its Ultimates line from Issue #6.
  • Marvel also gets a bit cancel-happy, dropping Victor Von Doom and The Destroyers in mid-production.
  • Marvel also uses 11 different artists to make sure The Incredible Hulk #2 is released on time.
  • Why is Marvel being so aggressive with sales and their bottom line? October sales figures reveal DC has gone from a  35% market share pre-New 52 to a 50% share. Marvel’s gone from 42% to 30%.
  • The 99, which Kitty mentioned two episodes ago, is now on Comixology.
  • Mick Anglo, creator of Marvelman (aka Miracleman) has died, aged 96.
  • Family Circus creator Bill Keane has died, aged 89.
  • Australia (well, ok, Victoria) is introducing DC Comics-themed number plates.
  • DC have revealed plans for rolling trade paperback and hardcover releases for the New 52, running from May to November next year. During this episode Grant noted that  Wonder Woman had not been scheduled. It has since (isn’t that always the way?) been confirmed it will be released in hardcover in May 2012.
  • Frank Miller appears to have completed the journey from comic industry legend to mad old right-wing crank as he uses his blog to attack the Occupy movement. The best response appears to have come from science fiction author and occassional graphic novel writer David Brin, who takes the opportunity to tear Miller’s 300 to pieces.
  • And in other news Suicide Squad has not been cancelled - although Harley Quinn does appear to be having sex with random people in truckstops.

Reviewed this episode

  • The 99 #1-2
  • The Unwritten
  • Ultimate Spiderman #4
  • SVK is not reviewed, but Kitty explains why.
  • Spaceman #1
  • Batwoman #2-3
  • The Flash #1-2

Special Topic: Religion in comics Kicked off by some feedback from the lovely Ian Mond we discuss representations of religion in superhero comics, including Magneto’s Judaism, Daredevil’s Catholicism, angels in the JLA, DC’s serial number-filed-off vision of heaven and hell, Spawn, The 99, the link between Superman and Moses, and more. We even mention Chick tracts. We’d provide a link, but they’re not very nice comics.

Episode 4: The Marvellous World of Marvel

professor-xavier-is-a-jerk.jpgNews

  • Marvel has announced another event, Point One, which kickstarts the Marvel Universe for 2012. http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/09/30/marvel-point-one/
  • In a week when comic readers worldwide slammed DC Comics for its inappropriate content, Marvel quietly released Kickass 2 Issue 4, which contained more horrifying content than anything in the New 52 - and by a pretty big margin.
  • And in other news, Suicide Squad has not been cancelled.

Reviews

  • Thor Volume 1 (J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel)
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Volume 1 (Brian Michael Bendis and David LaFuente)
  • Spider Island
  • Ultimate Comics All-New Spider-Man Issue 2.
  • The new Ultimate X-Men

Special Topic: The Marvellous World of Marvel In this episode’s special topic, we’re discussing all things Marvel: what’s good, what’s not, what Marvel does best and where it might be able to lift its game. We pay special attention to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, where risks get taken and new approaches and ideas are regularly tried. Titles that get our recommendation include:

  • Marvel Heralds
  • Young Avengers
  • Ultimate Spiderman
  • Runaways
  • Planet Hulk
  • Astonishing X-Men

Episode 3: The New 52

actioncomics.jpgNews

  • Comic artist Dave Hoover (Starman, Captain America) has passed away. (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/09/07/dave-hoover-passes/)
  • A North Carolina comic shop briefly boycotted all Grant Morrison comics indefinitely because in Action Comics #1 Superman says “GD”. This story was wrong on so many levels, since by their own admission the shop continued selling The Boys and Crossed. The comic shop owner has since removed the ban based on Morrison’s explanation. (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/09/08/north-carolina-comic-shop-to-boycott-action-comics/)
  • Missouri resident and mentally challenged man Mike Meyer has been the victim of a calculated robbery of his Superman collection - which is his pride and joy. Many fans worldwide sent Mike comics and merchandise to replace what has been stolen - shows the generosity of fandom that is seen all the time. Thief has been caught, collection returned - Mike has decided to donate what he received from other fans to charity. (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/09/06/stolen-faster-than-a-speeding-bullet/)
  • Kevin Keller, the gay character introduced in Archie in recent years, is getting married: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/kevin-keller-married-january-110914.html
  • DC’s The Ray is getting a relaunch in December, with a six-issue miniseries with Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray writing and Jamal Igle (Supergirl, Zatanna) handling the art. New (third) version, with a new name (Lucien Gates) and a new origin. (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/the-ray-the-new-52-110919.html)
  • An openly gay superhero joining the Teen Titans. Jose Barragan, aka Bunker, debuts in Issue 3 in November. (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/09/18/teen-titans-openly-gay-superhero/)
  • DC Universe Online is going free to play from October, with extra material available to users who pay a monthly fee. (http://www.newsarama.com/games/dc-universe-online-free-to-play-110919.html)

Reviews

  • Ultimate Spider-Man #1

Special Topic: The new 52

  • Multiversity Comics has been developing an aggregate of DC reviews to get a consensus view: for the first two weeks Batwoman, Swamp Thing and Animal Man are considered the best, Legion Lost, Mister Terrific and Hawk & Dove considered the worst. (http://www.multiversitycomics.com/2011/09/dcnu-weekly-review-round-up-week-one.html)
  • DC have apparently commissioned a range of “fill-in” issues to drop into the schedule if any artist or writer is running behind. They’re really treating the monthly schedule seriously.
  • Writer J.T. Krul has already left Green Arrow, to be replaced by Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens.
  • Rumours that titles that aren’t meeting DC’s targets are likely to be culled as soon as issue 6, which is about as severe a cut as a publisher can do. The worst titles usually at least get the chance to release their first trade paperback to see if sales bounce back.
  • Main titles discussed include Action Comics, Animal Man, Batgirl, Batwing, Batwoman, Detective Comics, Static Shock, Suicide Squad and Swamp Thing.

We really like and recommend Batwoman. We do not like nor recommend Suicide Squad.
